The Met Police have apologised to a student for errors in the handling of a failed rape case against him.

A review found that a series of errors by police and prosecutors were to blame for the collapse of a rape trial involving the 22-year-old Liam Allan.

The officer in charge of the case failed to find key evidence among 57,000 messages on the alleged victim's mobile phone, the report found.

Mr Allan had been charged with 12 counts of rape and sexual assault.
